FAQs

1.   How much does it cost to participate?
There is no tuition fee to sing in D.C. al Fine.  However, there are a few costs you should plan on:
  • Participants are required to bring their own copy of the LDS Hymnbook to each rehearsal (plan to write in it!).  Hymnbooks can be purchased for approximately $5 from a church distribution center or the church's online store.
  • Participants should expect to pay about $15 per semester to cover the cost of their own sheet music (about $30 per year).
  • Participants are asked to purchase a D.C. al Fine polo shirt, which will cost approximately $15.

2.   Do I need to have any previous singing experience?
This choir is open to everyone with an interest in singing.  For those with little experience, this choir is the perfect place to start, as it will teach you all the basic skills you need to sing in a choir, including reading music, singing with a beautiful tone, and even how to conduct.  For those with more experience, the choir also provides opportunities learn even more and use their skills in leadership roles.

3.   What should I bring with me to my audition?
If you would like to fill out the audition form before you come, you can download it here.  Otherwise, just bring a pen so that you can fill it out when you arrive!

4.   Do I need to bring an accompanist to my audition?
No.  Please do not bring an accompanist or accompaniment CD.

5.   I am really busy with sports and other clubs at school.  What is the time commitment like for this choir?
Participants must commit to attending one rehearsal per week, on Thursday evenings from 5:45 pm - 7:00 pm.  You are expected to attend 80% of all rehearsals, which means you must be at 4 out of every 5 rehearsals.

We will typically have one concert per semester - check out the Concerts tab to learn more.  In addition, our performance season culminates with a workshop and concert put on by the members of our choir.  This event happens on a Saturday in April, and choir members attend a training session on the Saturday prior to the event where they learn their specific roles in helping to run the event and teach the workshop sessions.

6.   I am getting ready to apply for college and I need leadership experience and/or service hours.  Can this choir provide me with any leadership or service opportunities?
Yes!  There are many opportunities to take on a leadership role within our choir, by becoming part of the the Youth Leadership Board or serving as a Youth Conductor.  Check it out here.

Singing in any choir is a great way to earn service hours, since the time you put in to rehearsals and performances directly benefit your community.  But compared to a typical choir, D.C. al Fine provides even more opportunities for service through its annual Outreach Workshop & Concert, where each choir member spends a day leading workshop sessions to members of the community who want to become better musicians.  If you count it all up, you could give 40-50 hours of service in one year just by singing in the choir one night a week!

7.   I am not in high school yet, but I really want to participate!  Can I?
At this time, only those who are in grades 8 - 12 may participate.  But, as we hear about your interest, we may expand to add an additional chorus for younger singers in the near future.  The best thing you can do is contact us (click here) to let us know of your interest.  Make sure to include your age/grade level!

8.   I am between high school and my mission.  Am I allowed to sing with the choir?
All singers may stay in the choir through the age of 19.  This does allow for young men who are waiting to leave on their missions to participate, as long as they have not yet turned 20.

9.   I am not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Can I still join the choir?
Yes!  While the choir's main purpose is to educate and inspire the youth of the LDS Church to confidently participate in the music in their church meetings throughout their lives, youth from other faiths can also benefit in similar ways by participating in the choir.  We hope our friends and neighbors of other faiths will feel welcome to learn and sing with us.
