Who We Are

D.C. al Fine is a dynamic group of young singers in grades 8 – 12 from the greater Washington, DC area.  Though some of our members may have a lot of singing experience while others may have little, all of our choir members have this in common: a passion for great music!

Through an engaging repertoire that explores a wide variety of music from many genres, time periods, and cultures, our singers learn how to sing with healthy technique and beautiful tone while gaining musical literacy and conducting skills.

In an environment that embraces the values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, our goal is to empower our youth to confidently contribute to the music in their church meetings both now and throughout their lives, be it as conductors, congregational singers, or choir members.

Our Director

"She is a great musician – vocally, at the keyboard, and as a conductor… I would not hesitate to put her in the category of ‘seasoned professional,’ though she is still young, energetic, and ‘hip.'"

Melodie Henderson is the founder and artistic director of D.C. al Fine.  As a high school and middle school choir teacher, Ms. Henderson’s musical talent and positive rapport with her students has motivated them to pursue and achieve musical excellence, earning many Superior (I) ratings and first place finishes at choir festivals.  As a conductor, Ms. Henderson garners praise from adjudicators and clinicians for her clear conducting and musical sensitivity.

Ms. Henderson is currently the choir director at Gunston Middle School in Arlington, VA.  She is also the founder and artistic director of The Collaborative Choir, and serves as the director of her church choir.  She recently accepted an invitation to guest-conduct the Mormon Orchestra of Washington, DC for their June 2012 concert.  Ms. Henderson studies conducting with Stan Engebretson at GMU (M.M. expected ’13), and previously studied under Ronald Staheli and Rosalind Hall at BYU (B.M. ’05, magna cum laude).  Outside of the rehearsal room, she enjoys baking, composing, and spending time with her husband, Mark.
